Ubiles scores franchise-record 55 in win

Times Union | www.timesunion.com

The Albany Patroons tried to set up Edwin Ubiles with a late celebratory alley-oop. As good and springy as he appeared Friday night, that one still wasn’t happening for the 32-year-old.

“I play more under the rim than in my college days,” the former Siena standout said with a smile after certainly having zero problems putting the basketball through the rim.

Ubiles scored a franchise record 55 points in a 135-112 win against the New York Court Kings. He had 12 points in the first quarter and 23 through the opening 24 minutes, before exploding in the second half of a game the home team never trailed at Washington Avenue Armory.

The 6-foot-9, 255-pound Freeman was at peace, ready to dive into his non-for-profit organization called Parsons Mantel. Its mission is to educate, empower and equip young adults to make positive life decisions and become productive members of their communities.

Freeman, now 34, will continue to work on that. But he has made a detour, one last trip through a basketball season. It’s a good one for him, too, because it’s home.

He might as well have asked me if I can count to ten. The short meal turned into a two and a half hour reminiscing session. We laughed, we smiled, he took lots of notes, and then he said, “We’re actually going to do this.”
